A’wesome opens up with “U&ME”, the trendy house-based song that I believe Cube was trying to go for with “How’s this?’ I do believe “U&ME” might have been passed up as the single because it is too trendy. It’s the same style song Taeyeon, Tiffany, and many other popular artists have been releasing lately: a mid-tempo “summer-daze”, tropical house-dance track.
If Cube was worried about following too closely to the tropical house trend they still could have chosen one of the other four songs off the EP. I personally like the last three songs “Morning Glory”, “Flirt”, and “Wolf”.
“Morning Glory” is definitely the stand out song as it completely strays away from all of the EDM and hip-hop blends that have filled the album. It’s a light, slightly retro-pop song. Hyuna executes her beautiful, sweet singing voice in the beginning of the song only to add in some sass with her sexy, rapping voice later on.
While “Morning Glory” stands out for it’s easy beat, “Flirt” is not one to be forgotten either for it’s quirky production. In this song, Hyuna’s lyrical flow is really able to shine as she switches up her cadence in each segment of the song, giving the trap song a surprisingly playful core.
Finally, “Wolf”‘s suave production is reminiscent of something off of Sun-mi’s solo debut album. It’s a mid-tempo R&B duet with Hanhae of Phantom that is a perfect closing of the overall dance album. Hyuna’s vocals compliments Hanhae’s more aggressive rapping style very well shaping the song into a sexy, night drive track. What I personally enjoy about this song is a section towards the end of the song in which the song shifts gears and becomes like a lullaby. It’s a very brief moment but really helps the song cruise into a strong ending.
With that being said, as a whole Hyuna’s A’wesome EP is a great album .Nothing is quite ground breaking but there are really solid productions that are both fun and enjoyable to listen to. But Hyuna’s single “How’s This?” is a very weak effort that needs to be taken back to the studio to polish up a bit or just completely thrown out.
